Master bedroom

I have some fairly solid ideas of how I want the master bedroom to look. I have a lot of trouble sleeping at night so it’s really important that the bedroom is, well, sleep-inducing. I don’t want anything exciting – in fact, the more boring the better! So think grey, grey, grey. A mid-tone grey that’s so boring it makes you sleepy.

Here are some of my inspiration pics.

This room is, I think, the epitome of greyness. It’s almost a uniform shade of grey, just different textures. I find it very soothing, although I think it’s a bit too much grey, even for me. I think I’d find myself eventually going nuts in it.

This next room is a bit more palatable. It’s still very, very grey, but it’s softened a bit by the floorboards and tiny pops of colour. Overall, this is probably the closest in look to what I’m after: marri floorboards and feature wallpaper behind the bedhead. I also really like the rug, though I’d get something more roomba-friendly.

The next room shows a coffered ceiling, similar to what we will (hopefully) have. We want the coffered ceiling for 2 reasons: to act as a frame for a ceiling fan, and as a substitute for a built-in MDF pelmet above the window. I’m envisioning soft, billowy curtains falling from the coffered ceiling, the entire length of the wall. The painting of the bulkhead is also quite interesting.

Finally, every bedroom needs a full-length mirror. I’ve been deprived of one for so long I’m going overboard on this one. Here’s my fantasy:

Wall mirror

Mirror, mirror on the wall.

And there you have it, a vague idea of what the bedroom will hopefully look like.

Here is the mood board:

I’m not sure what the right shade of grey is for the wall, and the mirror frame will probably be a neutral colour as I doubt I’ll find a purple one in the shops and I’m not about to ruin something perfectly good by painting it myself. Still haven’t found the right bedside pendants either, but I want something soft, romantic, organic, rather than sharp and overly modern.

Keywords: romantic but not overly feminine, luxurious.

  1. Nice ideas, very lux hotel-ish. Personally, I prefer life without full length mirrors! Be careful where you place them if light might disturb your sleep.

    • Ha, you wouldn’t believe the drama about where the mirror was going to go! Do after we did the preliminary bedroom design, my first question was, so where is the mirror going?
      *pause*
      “What about here?”
      “No, it faces the bed”
      etc.
Finally compromised on a position where it will only overlook the foot of the bed a small amount, so I’m OK with that. 🙂
