Ensuite, Pt 1. The Spa

The ensuite is our main bathroom, so we’ve paid a lot of attention to it. Here is the floorplan:

The unusual shape is a consequence of the passive solar design – it affects this room more than any other due to amount of north-facing window we wanted. North, incidentally, is the top left corner. Having north-facing windows here will apparently mean that the room will dry out faster following a shower, meaning less mould and therefore less cleaning. Win!

The spa is a big deal for me. I’ve always wanted a spa bath. Can’t wait to get home after a hard day at work, and soak in the tub with a glass of wine. Bliss! Especially in winter, after the freezing air conditioning at work.

Here is my inspiration pic:

The view is unlikely to be as stunning as this, but you get the general idea. Unfortunately, those vast expanses of unbroken glass are super-expensive, so we will need to split it up into multiple panes of glass. We will also have a corner window here, similar to the pic but probably wider, possibly the entire width of the wall.
Incidentally, if you can imagine the outdoor shower above as being an indoor shower, that looks like it will be pretty close to our layout.

Colour-wise, I’ve always imagined creamy marble everywhere, like this:

But somehow I just don’t imagine it working in a modern-styled house. Perhaps more of an off-white, pale stone colour like this:

I’m a bit stumped on colours here – I don’t really want white due to it being hard to keep clean, but I do want something reasonably bright and airy.

  1. Plants outside your bathroom window will be just as relaxing as the bay view. With so much light coming in I think you could get away with just about any colour theme, but I prefer the last photo to the one before it. The colour in the last photo looks like W.A. limestone. (I’m envious of all your bathroom windows. Our bathroom is on the second story so I think we’ll have a great view of other people’s roofs!)
